Gauteng residents were on high alert following the unpleasant weather conditions that hit the province these past few days leaving many major roads slippery, motorists have since been warned to drive with caution and extend the safe following distance.
Johannesburg Emergency Management Services spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi pleaded with residents in low-lying areas especially religious leaders and church-goers to refrain from using rivers and practices that involve water such as baptism and cleansings during these wet weather conditions.
Although no fatalities or injuries have been reported, the city condemns any usage of water streams. The city remains on high alert with 30 fire stations and rescue service providers across the city being fully operational to respond to water-related emergencies.
The South African Weather Service issued a warning for rain and thunderstorms in Gauteng. It says the weather conditions will result in localized flooding.
“We are pleading with our residents to work with us to prevent any water-related incidents during these wet weather conditions,” Mulaudzi concludes.
