The University of Witwaterand’s Student Representative Council (SRC) in Johannesburg’s stance on the ongoing defunding process by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) was released in a statement published yesterday. The SRC expressed its disappointment in NSFAS’s incompetence and the improper disbursement of student allowances.
Under Bukisa Boniswa, the student council called out the Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology Blade Nzimande and the current government to urgently address these issues and prioritize student’s welfare especially those from marginalized backgrounds to pursue their studies and achieve their academic goals.
To mitigate the situation arising from the defunding of NSFAS and the subsequent non-receipt of allowances by affected students, the SRC is taking proactive measures in collaboration with various organizations and stakeholders including WCCO (Wits Citizenship Community Outreach), clubs and societies.
Immediate relief initiatives formed by SRC have since been started, these include the provision of toiletries, distribution of sanitary towels and food parcel distribution.
These initiatives are supportive efforts toward students and SRC’s commitment to advocate for the rights and well-being of all students.
