In a highly dramatic Derby della Madonnina at the San Siro, Inter Milan secured their 20th Scudetto with a 2-1 victory over city rivals AC Milan. Goals from Francesco Acerbi and Marcus Thuram saw Inter take an unassailable 17-point lead in the Serie A standings with five matches still to play.
The match began with tensions high” as Inter looked to clinch the title against their bitter rivals. They took the lead in the 18th minute through a header from veteran defender Acerbi. The away side doubled their advantage four minutes into the second half, as French striker Thuram coolly slotted home to make it 2-0.
Milan did pull one back late on through former Chelsea man Fikayo Tomori, but it proved only a consolation as Inter held firm to claim their first Scudetto since 2020-21 under Simone Inzaghi.
The drama did not end there, however, as a mass scuffle in stoppage time led to three red cards being issued. Theo Hernandez and Davide Calabria were both dismissed for the hosts, while Inter’s Denzel Dumfries also saw red in disgraceful scenes at full-time.
But nothing could dampen Inter’s joy at claiming a historic 20th league title, secured in dramatic fashion by defeating their closest challengers Milan. Inzaghi’s men have been utterly dominant this Serie A season, wrapping up the Scudetto with five games to spare after a near-flawless domestic campaign.
The 23-24 Serie A season is one to forget for teams like Juventus and outgoing champions Napoli. The last trophy celebration for the Old Lady had Cristiano Ronaldo in the parade and for Napoli, perhaps it’s time to let go of Victor Osimhen for the better. The less said, the better.
