Portugal has advanced to the Euro 2024 knockout stages after a commanding 3-0 victory over Turkey in Dortmund. The 2016 European champions showcased their title contender status with a comprehensive performance, securing top spot in Group F.

Bernardo Silva opened the scoring midway through the first half, followed by a fortunate own goal from Turkey’s Samet Akaydin. Bruno Fernandes sealed the win early in the second half, courtesy of an unselfish assist from Cristiano Ronaldo.

With maximum points from two games, Portugal is guaranteed to win their group before their final match against Georgia. They will face a best third-place finisher in the last 16 in Frankfurt on July 1.

The match was briefly interrupted by pitch invaders seeking selfies with Ronaldo, raising security concerns. Coach Roberto Martinez expressed worry about the ease with which fans accessed the playing area.

In the group’s other match, Georgia earned their first-ever point in a major tournament, drawing 1-1 with the Czech Republic. This result leaves Turkey second in the group with three points, followed by the Czech Republic and Georgia with one point each.

Portugal’s impressive start cements their position as one of the favourites to claim the Euro 2024 title in Germany.
