What happens when a data scientist with a passion for storytelling and a self-taught pianist with an actuary’s precision join forces? You get Universe On Stage, a groundbreaking live performance company that is taking Joburg by storm.
During World of Academics, the breakfast team had the incredible opportunity to sit down with the dynamic duo behind this innovative company, Luca Pontiggia and Yasheen Modi. From the moment they entered the studio, their energy, an infectious blend of intellect, creativity and bromance immediately drew in the whole team. Luca, a visionary data scientist, and Yasheen, a talented pianist and actuary, have fused their unique talents into a mesmerizing production that redefines how we experience both science and art.
Their shows aren’t your typical lectures or concerts. Imagine sitting in a theatre, surrounded by breathtaking cinematic visuals, as Yasheen’s evocative piano compositions sweep through the room. Meanwhile, Luca masterfully weaves complex scientific concepts into a narrative that feels more like a heartfelt story than a science lesson. Together, they make astrophysics, quantum mechanics, and the mysteries of the universe accessible, emotional, and, dare I say, fun!
Since their debut at an actuarial conference organized by Discovery, they’ve been on an unstoppable rise. With 28 consecutive sold-out performances at the Bioscope Theatre, their blend of live music, science discussions, and cinematic art has resonated with a diverse audience, proving that curiosity and creativity know no bounds.
When asked Luca and Yasheen about what drives them, they didn’t hesitate: “Our goal is to bring science to life, to show people that it’s not just about equations and facts, but about wonder and discovery.” Yasheen added, “Music speaks to the soul, and science speaks to the mind. When you bring them together, you can create something truly magical.”
Each show feels like a magical journey through the cosmos, with the audience as both spectators and explorers. From the birth of stars to the intricacies of human consciousness, no topic is too vast or too complex for this powerhouse team. They make it accessible, engaging, and deeply personal. With plans to take their performances to international stages, Universe On Stage is a company to watch. They are on a mission to illuminate the wonders of science and art in a way that’s never been done before, inspiring audiences across the globe to see the world and the universe through a new lens.
