Kaizer Chiefs played out to a 2-2 all draw against Amazulu in their betWay premiership match at the FNB stadium on Tuesday evening. Amakhosi went into this encounter looking to turn their fortunes around following their 1-0 defeat to Soweto arch rivals Orlando Pirates, while Usuthu was in high morale following their 2-1 victory over Supersport United this past weekend.
Chiefs’ coach Nasreddine Nabi went into this battle having made six changes to his squad that faced Pirates this past weekend, with captain Yusuf Maart, Reeve Frosler and Bradley Cross getting the nod to start the game while new signings in Thabo Cele, Tashreeq Morris and Glody Makabi Lilepo all making their starts.
Both sides applied pressure on each other, where the home side almost took an early lead as Richard Ofori made a double save courtesy of fire shots from Maart and Lilepo. In the seventh minute, young sensation Mduduzi also fired a vicious shot, only to hit the side netting following a cut back from Frosler.
Morris marked his debut start, making his presence felt in the box when he forced an own goal from former Chiefs defender Ramahlwe Mphahlele in the 18th minute, but the lead was shortly lived five minutes later as Tshepang Moremi found the equalizer to make it 1-1 heading in the halftime break.
The Durban based side started the second half on a good note, taking the lead through a transition which saw Elmo Kambindu finding the back of the net to make it 2-1 in favour of Amazulu. After a chaotic spell of play, it resulted in Lilepo heading the ball back into the area before it bundled beyond the line via Richard Ofori for another own goal.
The results sees Chiefs move up to sixth position on the betWay premiership table while Amazulu moved to seventh, with just two points separating the two sides. The glamour boys will travel to the Western Cape to face Stellenbosch FC this weekend while Amazulu plays hosts to Marumo Gallants.
