Cape Town City have announced the signing of former Bafana Bafana international Thulani Serero in a quest to strengthen their squad for the remainder of the season. Serero’s signing is seen as a significant acquisition as his presence will not only strengthen the midfield for City but also provide mentorship to younger players within the squad, given his experience.
The Soweto born player has been training with the Cape club for the past two weeks, with coach Muhsin Ertugral believing that the midfielder will add value to his midfield options.
Before he left the country, he set the league on fire, winning the PSL Footballer of the Year, PSL Player of the Season, PSL Players’ Player of the Season, and ABSA Premiership Red Hot Young Player in the PSL all in 2011.
During his time overseas, Serero dawned jerseys of teams such as Vitesse in the Netherlands and UAE Pro League sides Al Jazira and Khorfakkan. He also secured three Eredivisie titles with Ajax. The midfielder also got a chance to compete in the UEFA Champions League with Ajax. Additionally, he was a league champion with Al Jazira during the 2020/21 season.
“Cream”, as he is affectionately known, is marking his return to South African football after 14 years abroad. Serero joins City at a time when they are struggling in the league with 21 points after 19 games and have lost their last five games.
