Al Ahly SC have sent Jose Riveiro his marching orders following a string of poor results in the 2025/26 season campaign. The Spanish tactician was sent packing following the club of the century’s 2-0 defeat to rivals Pyramids FC on Saturday.

“Padre”‘, only managed to register one victory in seven games, which seemingly was the last straw to influenced his sacking. Ahly currently sitting 12th on the log with five points.

Riveiro’s first task at Ahly was in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup in the USA, but they were eliminated from the group stages without registering a victory. Despite arriving in Cairo with a decorated résumé from his time at Orlando Pirates – where he clinched five trophies in three seasons – The 49 year-old struggled to hit the ground running as his side produced a handful of lacklustre performances in the past few games.

In a statement, the club expressed gratitude for Riveiro’s efforts and acknowledged his commitment, but emphasised that results did not meet expectations. “The committee stressed its appreciation for what he has done since taking charge, and that he has made a lot of effort, but the results did not help to complete the experience,” the statement read.

It remains to be seen whether the highly-rated coach, Jose Riveiro, will explore coaching jobs on the African continent (though declared that he’ll never coach another team in South Africa) or return to Europe.
