With the 2024 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) set to get underway this coming Saturday, 13 January 2024, the South African broadcasting Corporation (SABC) will be the exclusive broadcaster of the biennial African Association tournament in South Africa.

The public broadcaster has not only acquired the broadcasting right to the 52 games in the Cup of Nations tournament, but has also acquired the rights to other Confederation of African Football (CAF) competitions, which include the AFCON 2025 qualifiers, CAF CHAN 2024, CAF Champions League 2023/24, CAF Confederations Cup 2023/24, CAF Africa Women Cup of Nations 2024, CAF Women’s Champions League 2024 and CAF Super Cup 2024. This is courtesy of a deal between the rights holders, Togo based, New World TV and the SABC.

“This is really big, especially because we’ll be sharing all 52 matches as a free-to-air package, thanks to New World Television, who made it possible for us to secure these rights,” says Keletso Totlhanyo, the General manager at SABC Sport.

The public broadcaster secured the rights to the African Football showpiece ahead of pay TV channel Supersport, who had previously announced that they had failed to secure the broadcast rights for the 2024 tournament. In recent times, the pay tv broadcaster has shown little continental football, including the inaugural African Football League, which concluded in November 2023, where South African favourites Mamelodi Sundowns, were crowned champions.

In a statement released by the SABC, the public broadcaster had announced that all 52 games will be broadcasted on its television, radio, and digital platforms. “The SABC will broadcast all the AFCON 2023 matches live on SABC 1, SABC 3, SABC Sport Channel, and SABC Radio Stations, Radio 2000, RSG, Umhlobo Wenene FM, Ukhozi FM, Lesedi FM, Motsweding FM, Thobela FM, Phalaphala FM, Munghana Lonene FM, Ikwekwezi FM, Ligwalagwala FM and TRU FM in the language of choice to listeners.” Additionally, the newly launched SABC Plus platform and sabcsport.com, will also carry the games live.
