ActionSA is urging the provincial government to urgently declare Lilian Ngoyi a disaster zone.

The road formerly known as Bree Street, sustained damage on 19 July 2023, following an explosion caused by a gas leak beneath the surface.

The city has invested R196 million in street reconstruction, but the contractor has not made significant progress despite the negative impact on businesses and residents.

Previously, the Johannesburg Roads Agency said the appointed contractor has been facing challenges in fulfilling its contractual obligations despite previous interventions.

JRA threatens to terminate contract if contractor fails to rectify default, allowing 14 days for contractor to respond. JRA remains committed to delivering safe infrastructure.

ActionSA commends JRA for taking this decisive action.

“However, we also encourage JRA to address the concerns raised by the contractor, which have contributed to project delays.”

The public is concerned about the delays in preparing the road and other infrastructure damaged in a July 2023 gas explosion.

ActionSA postulate the prolonged repair is not only affecting businesses and residents but also commuters, and this situation cannot continue unabated.

The party’s statement makes reference to these problems, which are obstructing work and endangering the December 2024 timetable for Phase 1, including way leaves and the existence of three live cables, one of which is an 88-kilowatt cable.

“While JRA is focused on Small, Medium, and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) packages, it is crucial for JRA, the contractor, and other stakeholders such as City Power to collaboratively resolve these significant issues.”

ActionSA is committed to restoring the former glory of Johannesburg, requiring the cooperation of all stakeholders.

“The priority must be focused on attracting investments in our city and ensuring our infrastructure is well maintained.”
