Amazulu have announced Arthur Zwane and Vusumzi Vilakazi as their co-coaches after they parted ways with Pablo Franco Martin last week following a string of poor results in the opening 3 rounds of the Betway Premiership. Franco Martin was in charge of 39 matches for Usuthu registering 12 victories, 3 draws and suffering 15 defeats in his tenure. The Spanish tactician left the Durban-based rock bottom of the Betway Premiership table behind 15th-placed TS Galaxy, who have also lost all three of their opening encounters but have a better goal difference.
In a turn of event, former Kaizer Chiefs coach Arthur “10111” Zwane has been announced as a new co-coach of Amazulu and is set to share the responsibility with Vusumzi Vilakazi. This surprising development comes after AmaZulu’s initial pursuit of Magesi FC coach Clinton Larsen was seemingly blocked by contractual obligation. Vilakazi, who has been at the helm of Usuthu’s DStv Diski Challenge side since leaving Richards Bay, is set to collaborate with Zwane in bringing diverse perspectives and tactical approaches to the team.
Amazulu president Sandile Zungu confirmed the appointments and also expressed confidence in the pair’s ability to get the team back to winning ways.
“Their combined experience as both coaches and former professional players will be crucial in developing our younger talents and guiding our seasoned players in the task ahead,” Zungu said in a statement.
The duo will at least have some breathing space and time to get to know the players during the current international break, before their first assignment in charge against Stellenbosch FC in the Carling Cup in the weekend of the 18-20 of October, with the fixture having been confirmed in the tournament draw which took place at The Galleria Auditorium in Sandton, Johannesburg on Tuesday afternoon.
The success of this partnership will depend on Zwane and Vilakazi forging a strong working relationship and effectively managing the team’s dynamics. Usuthu faithful will be hoping this unconventional approach brings stability and success to the club. This presents an opportunity to both coaches reignite their coaching careers and silence their critics. They are known for their ability to develop young talent and they could potentially revitalise AmaZulu’s squad and instil a winning mentality.
