Reigning league champions Mamelodi Sundowns have appointed Miguel De Avezedo Cardoso as the club’s new head coach with immediate effect. The Portuguese’s appointment comes as a necessity for the club following some unsatisfactory results by the technical team which was speared headed by Manqoba Mngqithi.
The Brazilians currently find themselves the summit of the betWay premiership, equal with Soweto giants Orlando Pirates but with a greater goal difference. The Chloorkop based side has also managed two draws in their CAF Champions League group stages’ match, a goalless draw against Maniema Union of the Democratic Republic of Congo and a 1-1 draw against ASFAR Rabat of Morocco.
The club has appointed Azevedo as he comes with a lot of experience as he is a former coach of Tunisian giants Esperance de Tunis, whom he led all the way to the final of last season’s CAF Champions League final, losing out to reigning champions Al Ahly SC of Egypt. He takes over the technical bench alongside his three assistants, Fabio Fernandes, Pedro Azevedo and João Araújo.
Mngqithi has vacated the technical team bench with Wendell Robinson as well as Romain Folz, who was recently joined the club and the club have thanked them for their services.
“Mamelodi Sundowns is thankful to Manqoba Mngqithi and Wendell Robinson for their loyal services to the club over the years and wishes them everything of the best in their new endeavours,” reads the club statement.
“Manqoba Mngqithi and Wendell Robinson will forever remain part of the Mamelodi Sundowns Family. Mamelodi Sundowns is also thankful to Romain Folz, who recently joined the club.”
The club has decided to retain Steve Komphela and Kennedy Mweene, who will join the new appointed technical team.
