The Champions League’s league phase has concluded with a flourish, setting the stage for what promises to be an electrifying knockout phase. All five British teams have successfully navigated their way through, though their paths forward could not be more different.

In a significant restructuring of the traditional format, eight teams have earned direct passage to the last 16, while sixteen others must battle through play-off rounds. Liverpool and Barcelona, having secured the top two spots, are now on opposite sides of the bracket and can only meet in what would be a dream final.

The most intriguing storylines emerge from the play-off matchups. Manchester City, who barely squeezed through in a dramatic finale, now face a monumental challenge: they’ll battle either the defending champions Real Madrid or Bayern Munich in a tie that could easily pass for a final. Their Scottish counterparts Celtic will face whichever of these European giants City doesn’t draw, setting up two massive David-versus-Goliath encounters.

Arsenal’s reward for their strong showing is a direct last-16 berth, where they’ll face one of four possible opponents: Feyenoord, Juventus, AC Milan, or PSV. Aston Villa, fresh from their crucial victory over Celtic, also secured automatic qualification and will meet either Sporting, Club Brugge, Atalanta, or Borussia Dortmund.

The tournament’s new format has created some fascinating potential matchups, including a possible all-Italian clash between Juventus and AC Milan, while Paris Saint-Germain is guaranteed to face domestic opposition in either Monaco or Brest.

The journey to glory begins with the play-off draw on January 31, followed by two-legged ties in February. The successful teams will then join the action in March for the last-16 round, with all paths to the final being revealed in a comprehensive draw on February 21.

Notably eliminated teams include RB Leipzig, Stuttgart, and Shakhtar Donetsk, proving that in this new format, even established European competitors aren’t guaranteed safe passage to the knockout stages.
