Kaizer Chiefs have booked their spot in the quarterfinals of the Nedbank Cup after defeating Chippa United 3-0 in their round of 16 match at the FNB stadium on Saturday evening. Amakhosi went into this encounter seeking nothing but a victory which will bring them closer to redemption as this is their last chance at cup glory to end a ten year trophy drought.
The hosts took the lead in the 13th minute courtesy of Gaston Sirino, who fired a shot through a man of the match Reeve Frosler cross to find the top left corner, leaving Nigerian International goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali with no chance of attempting to produce a save.
The departure of Thatayaone Ditlhokwe this week seemed to be exposed at times as Chiefs’ defence had gaps especially in the wide channels, but Chiefs goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma came to the party as he parried over the crossbar a thumping shot from Giovanni Philander, who had been a thorn in the flesh for Chiefs’ defence since the start of the game.
Chiefs doubled their lead in the 77th minute courtesy of Inacio Miguel, who converted through a penalty spot kick, who sent Nwabali the wrong way after he brought down Pule Mmodi, losing the ball in the process but just when Mduduzi Shabalala was about to pull the trigger on the rebound, Nwabali pulled him down as well.
Meanwhile, The glamour boys sealed their quarterfinals qualification as Mmodi tapped the ball in the back of the net after Nwabali saved an initial shot by Ranga Chivaviro. Nasreddine Nabi’s charges have now scored 7 goals in the tournament with a 4-0 victory against Free Agents FC and now the Chilli Boys, and are still yet to concede a goal.
The victory sees Chiefs become the sixth team to book a spot in the last 8 with Supersport United, Stellenbosch FC, Durban City FC, Marumo Gallants and Orlando Pirates already through. All eyes will shift to Lucas Masterpieces Moripe stadium on Sunday as Mamelodi Sundowns will entertain Mpheni Home Defenders and it remains to be who Sekhukhune United will face with the fixture between Milford FC and Royal AM yet to take place or not.
