Our skin, the body’s largest organ, protects us from pathogens, regulates temperature, produces vitamin D, and reflects our overall health. When it’s smooth, strong, and glowing, it lifts our mood, confidence, and self-esteem. Whether or not we are into cosmetics, our skin demands attention, and caring for it is an essential act of self-love.
Yet, the beauty industry has a darker side. The rise of skin bleaching, often driven by cheap, unregulated products on the black market, continues to harm many , especially African women. According to the World Health Organization, between 25% and 80% of women in African countries regularly use skin-whitening products. This alarming trend highlights the urgent need for safe, affordable, and effective skincare alternatives.
At the heart of this change is Nonkazimulo Mdidimba, a scientist and founder of DEENURTURE PRODUCTS (PTY) LTD, a company dedicated to plant-based solutions for conditions like eczema, psoriasis, acne, and hyperpigmentation.
Living with eczema and psoriasis herself, Nonkazimulo struggled to find products that were both effective and affordable. In 2017, she began formulating soaps, toners, and creams for herself, her family, and friends. She combined her academic expertise in botany and organic chemistry from Walter Sisulu University with her research experience from her Master’s degree at Rhodes University to create gentle yet effective skincare formulas.
Encouraged by those around her, Nonkazimulo officially launched her business in March 2022. Starting with just three products — Goat’s Milk Soap, Rose Water Toner, and Shea Butter Body Cream — her range expanded to eight by the end of the year. By June 2024, she had taken a bold step forward, launching a white-label division that manufactures skincare and haircare products for other brands, small businesses, and guesthouses across South Africa.
Nkazimulo’s journey is more than a business success story. It is a powerful reminder that education is more than a certificate; it’s a toolbox that can be used to transform and inspire lives.
