Palace Stand Alone as Unbeaten Leaders After Stunning Weekend

Matchday 6 of the Premier League delivered everything fans could hope for: dramatic comebacks, late winners, defensive collapses, and one team cementing their status as the surprise package of the season.

Crystal Palace Continue Historic Unbeaten Run

In perhaps the result of the weekend, Crystal Palace pulled off another remarkable victory, defeating Liverpool 2-1 with a winner deep into stoppage time. A cheat-code getting cheated. Eddie Nketiah’s 97th-minute strike sent Selhurst Park into pandemonium, securing Palace’s place as the only remaining unbeaten side in the Premier League this season.

The Eagles’ current form is nothing short of extraordinary. They’ve now gone 18 games without defeat in all competitions, matching their joint-longest ever unbeaten run as a Football League club. What makes this achievement even more impressive? Three of those unbeaten games have come against Liverpool.

Ismaila Sarr had given Palace an early lead in the ninth minute, but Federico Chiesa equalized late on for the Reds in the 87th minute. Just when it seemed Liverpool had salvaged a point, Nketiah struck with virtually the last kick of the game, timed at 96:59—the latest winning goal Palace have ever scored in the Premier League.

Brighton Complete Stunning Chelsea Comeback

At Stamford Bridge, Brighton produced one of the comebacks of the season, storming back from a goal down to defeat 10-man Chelsea 3-1. The Blues looked comfortable at halftime, leading through Enzo Fernandez’s 24th-minute header, but the match turned on its head when Trevoh Chalobah received a red card early in the second half.

Brighton ruthlessly exploited their numerical advantage. Danny Welbeck equalized in the 77th minute before substitute Maxime De Cuyper put the Seagulls ahead. Welbeck then sealed the victory with a calm finish in the 100th minute, capping a remarkable turnaround.

The defeat marks Chelsea’s third consecutive Premier League game without a win, and they’ve now dropped to seventh in the table. It was the first time since October 2011 that Chelsea lost by two or more goals at home after leading at halftime.

Arsenal Leave It Late at St. James’ Park

Arsenal kept their title hopes alive with another dramatic late comeback, this time at Newcastle. Trailing 1-0 to Nick Woltemade’s first-half header, the Gunners looked destined for disappointment as Newcastle’s defense held firm throughout the match.

But Mikel Arteta’s side struck twice in the final minutes. Substitute Mikel Merino headed home the equalizer in the 84th minute, and then captain Gabriel powered home from an Odegaard corner in the 96th minute to snatch all three points.

The victory, Arsenal’s second-latest comeback win in Premier League history, moves them within two points of leaders Liverpool and keeps their title challenge firmly on track.

Manchester United’s Away Woes Continue

Manchester United’s struggles on the road continued with a 3-1 defeat at Brentford’s Gtech Community Stadium. The Bees dominated from start to finish, with Thiago scoring twice in the first half before Mathias Jensen added a third in stoppage time.

Benjamin Šeško pulled one back for United in the 26th minute for his first goal for the club, but it wasn’t enough. Bruno Fernandes also missed a penalty 15 minutes from time—his second penalty miss in three attempts this season after converting his previous 11.

The defeat extends United’s winless away run to more than eight Premier League games, their longest such streak since 2019. In fact, under Amorim, the Red Devils last tasted victory on the road at the relegated Leicester City on the 16th of March 2025. Terrifying, I know.

Manchester City Cruise Past Burnley

While others struggled, Manchester City had few problems dispatching Burnley 5-1 at the Etihad. The victory was made easier by two own goals from Burnley’s Maxime Estève, who became just the sixth player in Premier League history to score twice against his own team in a single match.

Matheus Nunes and a late Erling Haaland double completed the rout, with Josh Anthony’s first-half strike offering only brief hope for the visitors. City have now won their last 14 meetings with Burnley across all competitions.

Spurs Salvage Late Point

Tottenham avoided back-to-back home defeats thanks to João Palhinha’s dramatic 94th-minute equalizer against Wolves. Santiago Bueno had given the visitors a second-half lead, but Palhinha’s late strike secured a 1-1 draw and moved Spurs up to third in the table. For Wolves, the wait for a first win continues—they’re now winless in their last 10 Premier League games and remain rooted to the bottom of the table.
